This post is also a podcast episode!
Welcome, especially to all the coaches and aspiring coaches out there.
Coaching is one of the most rewarding paths you can take — not just professionally, but personally and spiritually. It’s also one of the most misunderstood industries out there.
The bar to entry is low, but the bar for mastery, sustainability, and real success? Very high.
That’s not meant to scare you — but I’ve seen too many new coaches enter the field thinking it’s going to be easier, faster, or more lucrative than it really is. And when reality hits, they feel like they’re doing something wrong… or worse, like they are wrong.
I’ve been thinking deeply about this lately, in part because I’m rereading a book that every coach should have on their shelf: The Prosperous Coach. It’s filled with perspective-shifting wisdom that’s helped me reconnect to what matters most in this work.
So today, I want to share six core truths and lessons I’ve learned in my 5+ years of coaching — hard-earned insights that I hope will support, ground, and inspire you, wherever you are on your journey.
1. Coaching Is Service, Not Self-Promotion
The heart of coaching is service. It’s about holding space, asking powerful questions, and helping people unlock what’s already inside of them.
Your brand, your offers, your marketing — it’s not about you. It’s about your clients. You’re not the hero of their story — you’re the guide. And the more you try to center yourself in your message, the less your people will feel seen.
Ego will sneak in. That’s normal. But part of your job as a coach is to constantly redirect your attention back to your clients and their transformation. That’s where the magic happens.
2. Your Value Is Not Up for Debate
One of the biggest emotional hurdles in coaching is separating your inherent worth from your work — especially when it’s so personal.
Whether someone says yes or no… whether a client gets incredible results or none at all… that doesn’t define you.
And yes, this gets especially tricky when you receive “constructive feedback” (or straight-up criticism). If you’re coaching with your whole heart, someone will eventually be rubbed the wrong way. This work requires deep empathy and thick skin.
For me, this has been one of the biggest lessons. With an undefined G-Center and Heart/Ego Center in my Human Design chart, I’ve had to work hard to separate my worthiness from my results — and from the identity I attach to my work. (You can learn more about that in my episode on defined vs. undefined energy centers.)
But here’s the truth: your worth is not up for negotiation. Ever.
3. Coaches Need Coaches
Coaching isn’t just a job — it’s a lifestyle of growth. And if you’re serious about doing this work, you must be doing your own inner work too.
I’m always surprised by how many coaches I meet who have never hired a coach themselves — or only do trades, or only consume free content. If you’re not investing in coaching, how can you expect others to?
This year, I hired a coach for a full 12 months — and it has been transformational. Here’s what that investment has done for me:
It pushes me to stay consistent and meet my income goals.
I have powerful support when I feel stuck or ready to give up (which happens!).
I get to witness excellence, absorb ideas, and sharpen my own coaching and business practices.
Nothing replaces being coached by a coach who walks their talk. Period.
4. There’s No Perfect Formula
There is no magic strategy. No guaranteed funnel. No perfect path.
The truth? Most “overnight success” stories you see on social media are anything but. Some people collapse time by hiring great support, leveraging a previous career, or pouring money into ads and visibility. But for most of us, it’s about consistent, aligned action — over time.
Success in coaching comes from showing up, even when you’re not feeling it. Even when your personal life is messy. Even when you’re tired.
This year, my word is consistency. Because coaching is my job — and that means showing up for both my clients and myself. That includes self-care, nervous system regulation, and honoring my boundaries. But it also means not disappearing for months at a time when things get hard.
You don’t need more certifications or a prettier brand. What you need is to coach more. Which brings me to the next point…
5. Clients Are Created Through Connection, Not Content
This idea from The Prosperous Coach changed everything for me:
“Instead of selling coaching, be coaching.”
Clients aren’t found or captured. They’re created — through powerful conversations and genuine connection.
You don’t need 10k followers or a perfect funnel. What you need is a willingness to show up, ask meaningful questions, and care deeply.
When you stop trying to sell and instead just serve, people feel it. They lean in. They trust you.
So stop hiding behind your Instagram grid and get into real conversations. Reach out. Offer value. Invite people into a deeper dialogue. That’s where the magic — and the business — really begins.
6. Fall in Love With the Business of Coaching
You can’t just love coaching. You have to love the business of coaching — or at least make peace with it.
The backend, the marketing, the systems… it’s all part of your sacred work. And when done in a way that honors your energy, your values, and your vision, business can be just as fulfilling and creative as coaching itself.
This is the part I love most: helping women Soulpreneurs build businesses that are sustainable, custom-fit, and deeply nourishing. Not exhausting. Not performative. Not cookie-cutter.
If you want to make this your life’s work — build something that feeds your soul and supports your lifestyle — you have to fall in love with the whole process.
