Building an Intuitively Led Ayurveda, Yoga, and Retreat Business Over 27 years with Andrea Russell - Holistic Business Growth
Building an Intuitively Led Business with Andrea Russell

THIS IS ALSO A PODCAST INTERVIEW!

What if building a successful business wasn’t about forcing yourself into a niche, following someone else’s blueprint, or hustling your way toward burnout?

What if it was actually about learning to trust yourself more deeply?

In this week’s episode, I got to sit down with Ayurvedic doctor, yoga therapist, meditation teacher, and longtime entrepreneur Andrea Russell for a conversation about intuition, nervous system regulation, multi-passionate entrepreneurship, and creating a business that allows for all of who you are.

Andrea has spent more than 27 years building a deeply rooted healing business that blends Ayurveda, yoga, mindfulness, retreats, nervous system work, and women’s wellness. And what becomes very clear throughout this conversation is that her business hasn’t been built through rigid strategy alone — it’s been built through consistency, courage, intuition, and an incredible willingness to evolve.

This episode is especially powerful for anyone who has ever felt like they were “too multi-passionate” to succeed in business. Because Andrea’s story proves the opposite.

A 27-Year Journey of Intuitive Entrepreneurship

Andrea’s entrepreneurial journey began the way many soulpreneur paths do: through her own healing.

After a back injury in the late 90s, yoga became a catalyst for reconnecting with her body and understanding the body’s innate capacity for healing. That experience led her into massage therapy, yoga teaching, craniosacral therapy, nervous system work, and eventually Ayurveda after her own chronic health struggles transformed through Ayurvedic medicine and Panchakarma in India.

The next evolution of Andrea’s business almost always emerged from something she was personally moving through. Not from trend forecasting. Not from copying someone else’s model. From lived experience.

That’s such an important reminder for purpose-driven entrepreneurs. Often the thing you’re being called toward is connected to what you’re actively learning, healing, questioning, or embodying yourself. Your life becomes part of the curriculum.

The Truth About Multi-Passionate Businesses

Andrea speaks so honestly about being a multi-passionate entrepreneur — and why she never fully resonated with the pressure to “niche down.”

Instead of forcing herself into one tiny lane, Andrea built what I would call an ecosystem business.

At the center are the core threads that define her work:

  • Ayurveda
  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Nervous system healing
  • Consciousness and well-being

From there, different offers naturally branch outward — retreats, cleanses, trainings, workshops, one-on-one sessions, women’s programs, mindfulness courses.

And Andrea shared that this diversity has actually protected her business through major life and cultural shifts. During the 2008 recession, her one-on-one nervous system work thrived while yoga studios struggled. During the pandemic, retreats disappeared overnight — but because she had already built online courses and virtual offerings, she was able to pivot quickly and sustain the business.

Sometimes people think niching means becoming smaller. But Andrea’s story shows that depth and diversity can coexist beautifully when they’re rooted in a clear core mission.

Consistency Builds Trust

At the same time, Andrea also spoke about the importance of consistency — something I have been talking about a lot lately on the podcast.

Even though Andrea offers many different things, there are certain rhythms in her business that have remained incredibly consistent for years:

  • Annual retreats in the same locations
  • Seasonal Ayurvedic cleanses
  • Long-term client relationships
  • Recurring workshops and trainings

That consistency created trust. And trust created momentum. This is the part many newer entrepreneurs underestimate.

Building a sustainable business often takes much longer than social media would have you believe. Consistency compounds quietly over time until suddenly you realize: People know your work. They refer others. They come back year after year. Your reputation starts carrying some of the momentum for you. That doesn’t happen overnight.

Nervous System Regulation & Entrepreneurship

A huge thread throughout the conversation was nervous system regulation — not just for healing, but for entrepreneurship itself.

Andrea shared that nearly every major business decision she’s made has been intuitively led. She hasn’t relied heavily on formal business training or rigid formulas. Instead, she continually checks in with her body and nervous system to feel what is truly aligned. But there’s an important distinction she makes:

Intuition is easiest to access when we are regulated. When we’re dysregulated, overwhelmed, burnt out, or stuck in survival mode, it becomes incredibly difficult to hear our inner knowing clearly.

Because so many entrepreneurs are trying to force clarity from a nervous system that’s already overloaded. As Andrea beautifully put it: “Rooted, regulated, and resourced.” That’s the foundation. Not hustle. Not panic. Not over-functioning.

A regulated nervous system expands your capacity — for business, relationships, creativity, leadership, and life.

Midlife, Perimenopause & the “Undivided” Life

Andrea shares how her own experience with perimenopause inspired her newest program, Your Wise Way — a community-centered course blending Ayurvedic wisdom and Western hormone science for women navigating midlife transitions.

One of the most powerful moments in the episode came when Andrea described midlife with one word:

“Undivided.”

No longer willing to live fragmented. No longer willing to compromise herself. No longer willing to split her energy in ways that don’t feel aligned.

Because for many women, midlife becomes the season where the performance starts cracking. The old roles, identities, expectations, and people-pleasing patterns stop fitting. And underneath all of that is often a quieter question: What would it look like to fully belong to myself?

Ayurveda, Gut Health & Hormonal Balance

Andrea also shared an important Ayurvedic perspective on perimenopause and women’s health: Good health begins in the gut. In Ayurveda, digestion is foundational — not just physically, but energetically and emotionally as well.

Many women are layering supplements, hormones, and wellness protocols on top of a system that’s already depleted, inflamed, overstressed, or unable to properly digest and assimilate what’s being given to it. Andrea explains why healing often starts with:

  • Digestion
  • Lifestyle
  • Nervous system support
  • Stress regulation
  • Sleep
  • Foundational nourishment

Not because supplements or HRT are “bad,” but because deeper support systems matter too. Her approach feels refreshingly nuanced: Not either/or. Not dogmatic. Both/and.

Community as Medicine

We both reflected on how important it is for women — especially in entrepreneurship and midlife — to stop trying to navigate everything alone. That’s part of what inspired the creation of Midlife Madison, a new community initiative bringing together local practitioners and conversations around women’s wellness, identity, purpose, hormones, mental health, and healing in midlife.

Their first public event: Thrive in Midlife: Understanding Your Physical Body in Perimenopause and Beyond takes place September 24th at the Goodman Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

And honestly? Conversations like this feel incredibly timely. Women are no longer willing to suffer silently through burnout, hormonal chaos, nervous system dysregulation, and identity shifts without support. Nor should they have to.
