THIS IS ALSO A PODCAST INTERVIEW!
Have you ever had the feeling that something in your life just isn’t right anymore?
Maybe nothing is obviously wrong. From the outside, your life or business might even look pretty good, but internally, there’s a whisper that keeps getting louder, telling you that something needs to change.
The hard part is that we often hear that voice long before we know what we’re supposed to do about it.
That’s exactly what I talked about with Sam Tetzlaff on the podcast this week. Sam is a certified Mystic Astrologer, Somatic Educator for Women, and has a background in Counseling Psychology. Her work bridges the mind, body, and spirit to help women reconnect with themselves and their own inner wisdom.
Her own journey into this work started when she realized the life she had built was no longer the life she wanted.
You Don’t Have to Know Where You’re Going
Before becoming an astrologer and somatic educator, Sam had spent years working as a professional counselor. She had moved into a supervisory role and thought she was on an established career path.
Then she started hearing a very clear internal message: I don’t want this life.
She didn’t immediately know what that meant or what needed to change. And I think this is where so many of us get stuck.
We feel the nudge toward something different, but our brains immediately want the entire plan. We want to know where we’re going, how it will work, and whether we’re making the right decision before we’ve even taken the first step.
But you can’t know what step ten looks like until you’ve taken step one.
Sometimes your only job is to follow the next breadcrumb.
Follow Your Curiosity
One of my favorite mantras has always been follow your curiosity, and that’s exactly what Sam began doing.
Astrology had interested her for years, even though her clinical background had made her somewhat dismissive of it. Instead of needing to know where that interest would lead, she finally gave herself permission to explore it.
A course led to an astrology apprenticeship. That apprenticeship helped her understand herself in an entirely new way, and eventually she began reading charts and building a business around the work.
I think this is such an important reminder when we’re trying to figure out our purpose.
Not everything you’re drawn toward needs an immediate business plan. Sometimes the thing that keeps lighting you up is simply asking you to pay attention.
Take the class. Explore the idea. Have the conversation.
Let yourself discover where it leads.
Sometimes It’s Not Overthinking—It’s Your Nervous System
Something Sam brought up in our conversation that I loved was the connection between change and the nervous system.
Sometimes when we’re overthinking a decision, we’re not simply confused. Our nervous system may not feel safe making the change.
You can tell yourself that you’re capable of leaving the job, starting the business, becoming more visible, changing a relationship, or stepping into a different version of yourself. But if your body experiences that change as unsafe, your mind will find plenty of reasons not to do it.
I often say that we can only grow at the rate our nervous system allows us to.
The bigger the identity shift, the more capacity we need to navigate it.
Coming Back to the Body
For a long time, many of us were taught to make decisions almost entirely from the mind. Be logical, choose the safe option, follow the path that makes sense, work harder and figure it out.
There’s absolutely a place for logic and strategy, but they aren’t supposed to be our only sources of information.
Our bodies carry information too.
Part of Sam’s work is helping women reconnect with that wisdom instead of constantly overriding it. Rather than only asking What makes the most sense?, we can also ask what feels true, what keeps pulling us forward, and what our bodies might already know.
When the Old Version of Your Life No Longer Fits
Sam and I also talked about how many people seem to be experiencing some version of this right now.
Careers, relationships, systems, expectations, and identities that once worked may suddenly feel restrictive. Sam uses astrology as one tool for understanding these larger cycles and getting a wider perspective on what we’re experiencing.
That doesn’t mean bypassing the hard parts of change or pretending everything happens for a beautiful spiritual reason.
Growth can be painful. Sam described parts of her own journey as a dark night of the soul, and she wouldn’t pretend those experiences were easy.
But she can also see what they made possible.
Sometimes what is falling away is creating room for a version of your life that you couldn’t see from where you were standing before.
Becoming Your Own Leader
One phrase Sam used in our conversation was embodied leadership.
To me, embodied leadership is about taking ownership of your own life and remembering that you have agency. You don’t have to wait for someone else to tell you what you’re allowed to want or give you permission to pursue it.
This can be especially powerful for women who have spent years being good at following the rules, achieving, taking care of everyone else, and doing what they thought they were supposed to do.
Eventually, the question becomes: What do I actually want?
And answering that question might require you to listen to yourself in a way you haven’t before.
You Only Need the Next Step
If you’re in a season where you know something needs to change but you don’t know exactly where you’re going, you don’t need to figure out the entire path.
As we talked about in this conversation, you can’t know what step ten is until you take step one or two.
Instead, follow your curiosity. Pay attention to what is exciting you, lighting you up, pulling you in, or showing up repeatedly as signs and synchronicities.
And rather than immediately asking how this could become a business or where it’s ultimately going to lead, start with what you have space for right now. Take the baby step and stay open to where it leads.
Maybe it introduces you to a new person. Maybe it gives you an experience that clarifies something for you. Or maybe, like astrology did for Sam, it becomes a much bigger part of your life than you ever expected.
You don’t have to know yet.
You just have to follow the next breadcrumb.
